The best known traditional Indian paintings are those of the Dorothy Dunn school, named after a great early teacher at the Santa Fe Indian School. She encouraged her students to combine their innate design sense with narrative depictions of their cultural life.

Other expressions include the Plains Indians' abstract paintings on parfleches, or saddle bags; the ledger drawings created by early day Indian prisoners; and the tourist items called "Bambi art" that evolved into stylized, linear paintings.
