"I invite the viewer to look more closely at the natural world in which we live."
Born in Boston and raised in Maine and New York, Alan Paine Radebaugh moved to New Mexico in 1979. Never having left behind his Maine roots, he continues to spend part of each year working in Maine. He studied photography and jewelry making at the College of Wooster in the 70's and printmaking at the University of New Mexico, receiving a BFA. During the 80's he designed sculptural furniture, exhibiting in Los Angeles, New York, and throughout New Mexico. Since 1988 Radebaugh's predominate medium has been painting.
In 2005 Radebaugh changed his palette, moving from lush, saturated color to more muted colors, creating the Night Series. Although his palette changes, Alan's composition continues to be the abstract patterns or fragments of nature. The Night paintings echo fractal patterns inherent in the unfolding of natural processes.
“I paint fragments because that's what I see. Seeing fragments is, for me, seeing form without association, without name.”

In the spring of 2001, when Alan traveled from the deserts of New Mexico to the mountains of Alberta, the fragments evolved. From the Canadian Rocky Mountains, he gathered not only new images but also pigments, selecting rocks and other organic materials that he crushed and mixed with medium, creating the Alberta Fragments, portraits of Alberta. During his second residency in Alberta in 2002, he painted the Fragment Dialogues, again using natural pigments from the area.
Following a 2002 stay in Maine, where Radebaugh sought fragments in and near bodies of water, he set aside natural pigments and returned to oils, a medium he had used extensively before 1995. The paintings that emerged, Fertile Fragments and the Delphic group, form a dynamic world of saturated color. These images, as in previous work, are the abstract patterns or fragments of nature.
Of his work Alan says, "I paint fragments because that's what I see. Seeing fragments is seeing form without association, without name. Annie Dillard writes about this—about seeing without language. In my earlier works, both 3-D and painting, although I based designs and images on fragments, I transformed them to fit my purpose. Since I began my Fragment Series, I transcribe the fragments exactly as I see them. My paintings are portraits." |
