“Out in the Meadow” Egg tempera, 9" x 12", $2400 |
An art career is a choppy ride. Some thrills. Some spills. Much agony. Some ecstasy. One day you win the sweepstakes in the national competition and the next you are rejected from a local one. You sell out at one gallery show and bomb out at the next. And after each experience on the teeter-totter comes soul-searching. Is the work itself not good enough, prices too high (or too low), too large, too small, too foreign or too local or is it the times or the time - the big ball game on that night, the week of the State Fair, the day before taxes are due or the day after or the week the stock market fell 50 points?

And the thing that makes it all so excruciating of course is that it is so intimate - so much you. It's not the stamped-out toy car or from the great cosmetic vat. It's the expression of you and your choices and your understandings. What many an abstract painter does not realize is the basic emotion also involved in creation of a realistic or representational work. There is still the choice of what to paint, whether serene or churning or questioning, story-telling or simply mood-setting and the forms and directions necessary to embody that emotion you want to convey to the viewer. It's all you. You saw it. You composed it, and you painted it and if you're not very careful to keep the Deep Self of you safe and separate, a rejection of it is a rejection of you.

"This wildly accelerating land we live in requires a new idiom. I'm painting about the invisible worlds that are the playground of the visible...about the miracles of sunsets and dew on the dandelions and rainbows that end the other side of the mountain or almost at your fingertips...about mountains that exist magnificently and majestically for a moment and then disappear into a curtain of lowering mist." -from A Vision of Silence: The Egg Tempera Landscapes of Doris Steider

"I'm painting from my heart's vision of our land. You don't see my sunset, but perhaps you will see in my painted description the colors your world needs for its own harmony. If we believe in the miracles all around us, we'll begin to see the magic happening. This is what I'm stretching my mind and my heart and my deepest inner self to paint." -from A Vision of Silence: The Egg Tempera Landscapes of Doris Steider
