Gugger Petter - Barking Dogs
Born in Denmark, Gugger Petter studied art in Copenhagen, Rome, Mexico City and Belgium. Before coming to the United States, she lived in Mexico for 11 years. During that time she was saddened by the daily appearance of stray dogs roaming the country. Nothing was ever done to assist these dogs or stop the continuous flow of stray dogs. In 1994 Petter decided to pay tribute to them by creating sculptures in bronze and mixed media. Since then she has given further voice to these animals by including a dog in many of her large wall pieces depicting street scenes. In her new exhibit, “BARKING DOGS” opening at Jane Sauer Gallery Friday, August 20th, Petter further establishes her deep feelings for lost canines. Known for depicting truncated figures of both men and women in her scenes, for the first time she shows the dogs as the central characters, unaffected by the feet and legs of surrounding people or even of the viewer.

Out of Tradition
Carol Emarthle-Douglas (Northern Arapaho-Seminole), Lisa Telford (Haida), and Dawn Walden (Ojibway) - All three of these extraordinarily talented women capture the richness of their Native cultures through their use of materials, techniques or both. The baskets they create elevate what began as a utilitarian container to fine art. Each has stretched the concept of traditional forms and images in ways new to them. They have acted fearlessly in pushing the envelope of a strong and treasured form of weaving to make a contemporary statement. Emarathle-Douglas, Telford, and Walden have been recognized for their ability to make unique baskets that have easily become treasures by collectors. Lisa Telford and Dawn Walden begin their work by carefully harvesting materials at the correct time and preparing the materials. This can take as long as actually weaving the basket. Both of these artists began with skills from their native traditions. Carol Emarthle-Douglas moves between Native materials and contemporary materials such as waxed linen thread, reed, hemp and raffia. Her work could be best described as narrative. She meticulously weaves figures, animals and captures designs from a multitude of sources. We are proud to be able to exhibit such outstanding work by these three women during Indian Market Santa Fe.
