Ted Gall + Hal Larsen
The 8th two-man show featuring sculptor Ted Gall and painter Hal Larsen. Sculptor Ted Gall creates small and large scale bronze work that is mysterious, provocative, and psychologically insightful, often incorporating wry social commentary and humor. Gall's series of human and animal heads open up to reveal intricate and dynamic interior scenes. Gall, who studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and began his career as an animator and graphic designer, has an exceptionally fertile mind. “I realized years ago that I wanted to do more than just sculpt the human figure,” he said. “I wanted to start telling stories about people facing different situations and problems.” Gall's sculptures tend to work in the ways dreams do, presenting familiar images in unexpected combinations and contexts and leaving us to puzzle out what to make of them. He leads us to uncover masks within masks and tableaux within tableaux, drawing us down to deep places or bringing the depths almost into view, yet never presuming to tell us what we are seeing. This will be his 8th exhibition at Hunter Kirkland Contemporary. Painter Hal Larsen, who now resides in Ecuador, SA, began a distinguished career more than thirty years ago and has never played it safe. Rather, he has dedicated himself to making art that resonates with the truths of his own life. Larsen’s emotional, abstract expressionist paintings reflect the joys and trials encountered in any search for personal and creative authenticity. He seems to feel his way through an intricate inner landscape, guided mainly by an intuitive sense of rightness in the images that emerge. The result is artwork of remarkable richness and depth. Even when one mood or thought seems to dominate the surface, there is always the suggestion of much more lying underneath – hints of things half-buried, half-awakening, a mix of memory and desire, sometimes, quiescent, sometimes almost playful. In his recent work, both the canvas and paper, his brushwork is looser, freer, with more of the artist’s hand in evidence. In both subject and technique, Larsen shows strong affinities to major Abstract Expressionists and their precursors (he has a special affection for the Fauves). This will be his 9th exhibition at Hunter Kirkland Contemporary.
