The Independent Spirit:
In 1981 a group of 23 local independent fine artists founded the Santa Fe Society of Artists. Their dream was to make a living doing what they loved most. The founding members agreed that nothing stimulated professional development as much as exhibiting their own artwork in a public setting.

Convenient Downtown Location: Since 1988, all of our outdoor shows have been in the First National Bank of Santa Fe's plaza parking lot, across from the Museum of Fine Arts, (between W. Palace Avenue and W. San Francisco Street)

Community Involvement: The society actively supports our community arts groups such as Fine Arts for Children & Teens (F.A.C.T) with donations toward after school arts classes. In 2003 our community outreach committee proudly initiated our High School Art Scholarship Program and awarded two senior high school art students with a $500.00 scholarship.

The Independence Continues: Today, the Santa Fe Society of Artists has become a premier juried fine art group of over 80 members and is a vibrant part of the thriving Santa Fe art community. Under our white tents you can meet and buy fine art directly from the artists in a relaxed outdoor setting.

Ke'vin and his wife Carie are from North Idaho and Eastern Washington and are now Santa Fe transplants. Like many artists, when he crossed the state line, New Mexico became Ke'vin's new home. In Idaho, Ke'vin's work was representative of the Southwest, and now his work encompasses the regional people, animals, and architecture of New Mexico. For over twenty five years Ke'vin has worked in various mediums including pen & ink, watercolor and colored pencils, and in recent years has been concentrating on pastels. He favorite subjects include women, buffalo, desert landscapes, African animals. A studio painter, Ke'vin has also taught art professionally since 1996. Ke'vin is enamored with passing his creative knowledge to others, and giving someone the ability to create paintings themselves.

Luminous portraiture of landscapes, flowers and nudes.

My photographs are a reflection of my feelings of joy at the beauty of the earth, especially New Mexico. I love to discover unusual and visually exciting perspectives on land, water, sky and wind. I look for interesting ways to reveal light, shadow, form, texture and color.

This can be done in vast landscapes as well as in close-up views of the landscapes within a flower or the haunting beauty of an old adobe church.

It is a joy for me to share my love of the land through the visual impact of my photographs.

* Also showing at The Spur Ranch Gallery in Fort Worth Texas.

Wonderful Depth of Feeling Captured by Texture and Color
All of my artwork has to do with my experience and perspective of life.  Each piece is a personal expression of where I am at when I create it.  Painting is part of my soul.  I am not full unless I am painting.  Everything I see I look at in terms of how I would make it into my artwork; how I would photograph it, how I would paint it, how I would color it in terms of how I am feeling.

Primitive Images on Handmade Paper

My artwork is reminiscent of ancient cave paintings. While I have traveled extensively photographing ruins and rock art throughout the world, the inspiration for my designs, use of color and composition, come from within. My imagery, full of spirals and handprints, horses and dancers, recall a simpler time, a more spiritual time when healing, fertility, sustenance, and protection came from the gods. These basic human needs haven't changed. Collectors and art lovers purchase my work because through the images they feel connected to every culture past and present, and to the universal spirit which has infused all cultures since the beginning of time.

I learned the art of papermaking at Colorado State University. Over the past thirteen years I have developed a unique method of making handmade paper from cotton rags and treating it with layers of acrylic paint. The paper ends up looking like ancient rock or leather or bark, the perfect background for primitive images.

Santa Fe, New Mexico has been my home for the last twelve years. It is a magical place that echoes the feeling I strive to create through my artwork. Come visit and see for yourself.

Hi! Hello! Howdy!

As I enter the 14th year of this particular "1950's era" painting series, I'd like to thank all my supporters and fans. For 14 years now I've been able to paint full time and make a living by creating images that make you and me laugh, chuckle or just plain giggle. It is still a thrill for me to know that you have a print or original of mine in your life.

So, partner, saddle up for..."A wild ride down memory lane" and Happy Trails,
-Spencer K

Alchemical Abstracts

The collision of dimensions is a place where science encounters art through texture, color, composition, and movement. I dream all of my work prior to creating it. The dream state is open to all possibilities where colors become frequencies weaving the tapestry of time. The work begins with sensually textured abstract surfaces and evolves with portions of symbols and images like treasures being unearthed from an archeological dig.

I am intrigued with the possibilities science offers and equally so by the mysteries of the spirit. Science operates within defined parameters and art occurs when science meets the dynamic flow of the spirit. I have always been fascinated with alchemy, the process of transforming something common into something precious. As a result I make many of my own papers, paints, and encaustics using common elements, and employ the transformative processes of printmaking and collage. Astrophysics, quarks, super strings, and phantom strands of DNA are inspiration for the mixed media pieces. Mathematical formulas give rise to complex, dynamic images through the dream state. I believe that art and science can inspire and influence each other. History is a part of memory; potential a part of imagination, and where the two encounter and merge is the essence of power.
