Patricia Amlin, whose work is included in most major institutions in the United States including the Smithsonian, just exhibited a new series of 12 large oil paintings during January at the Gunnison Arts Center in Gunnison, Colorado. “Flyway or Avian Abstractions; An aerial view of the amazing migration of Sand Hill Cranes from Bosque del Apache, NM to the Alaskan Tundra is inspired by the amazing physical feats of these many million year old cranes who once flew over the wooly mammoths and watched the birth of the Rocky Mountains. The excitement of attending the dawn fly out of the thousands of warbling birds is one of the most spiritual events to be found today.“ Amlin’s interest in the subject began with a dream while she was teaching Film Making and Drawing at San Francisco State University. Patricia retired from teaching, moved to Gunnison, Colorado, across from ”Neversink”, a resting place on the Great North American Crane Flyway and began painting. She drew upon her early training at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Skowhegan School of Painting where she worked with Oscar Kokoschka, Max Weber, George Grosz and Isabel Bishop. Flying along with this classic education is her obsession from years in film with movement, time, space, natures recurring metamorphosis. Patricia’s delight is in co-creating a single moment in a cycle when all energy is in motion. Her paintings are full of light and love of the Creation. This new series spans the crane migration over the red rocks of the desert to the cold purity of the nesting grounds of the north and the birth of a new generation of these fast disappearing remarkable birds. |

Judy Asbury’s paintings are an intuitive exploration of inner and outer realities. Asbury is an internationally recognized astronomical artist. Her expressionistic "spacescapes” are created using photographs from scientific institutions such as NASA. These oil paintings have been exhibited internationally in numerous one person and group exhibitions including a one person exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and the Basel Art Fair. Asbury has resided in New Mexico since 1976, and is based in the Jemez Mountains and Santa Fe. Her expressionistic Jemez mountain landscapes have also been widely exhibited and collected, and feature surfaces embellished with gold leaf, metallics, and vivid colors. |

Jane Chavez 2317 Botulph Rd The uniqueness of my fiber art developed from my passions for baskets, horses and Spanish metal work. My adoration for baskets was cultivated at childhood when on Saturday mornings in Argentina I would wait with excitement for a horse drawn basket cart to pass in front of our house. As it approached I would run out of the house and admire the utilitarian baskets piled high on the cart. My enthusiasm for horses has always been with me ever since I can remember and I have always had them in my life. Since living in the southwest I have become intrigued by early silver and tinwork done by the Spaniards. My art reflects a personal interpretation of these multicultural interests. My horsehair hand stamped sterling silver baskets are contemporary in nature and traditional in materials. I use a coiled basketry technique with innovative stitching designs and imaginative sterling silver metal work. The basket’s shapes vary depending on the original hand stamped sterling silver, which serve as a base for the horsehair bundles. |

It is great reverence for our relationship to the natural world that entices me to paint. The Grand Canyon and other sacred and stunning landscapes are deeply inspirational to me as an artist. My art making is on some level about the mystery and sharing my response to experiences in nature. The colors, textures, and patterns revealed by dramatic light inspire me. Subconscious elements of symbolism are everywhere in the natural landscape and create emotional responses that come from deep within, bypassing the left brain and connecting straight to the heart. I want to re-create the feeling that being in the particular outdoor experience gave and to learn from the experience. Each painting is an unpredictable adventure and I never know what the end result might be, but only that I have to make the attempt and see what emerges.

As an artist I speak through color and shape of an amorphous yet ethereal quality. After years of representational painting in oils. I began abstracting forms in acrylic medium. Each painting provides its own unique fascination by the rhythm and movement of the colors. The random patterns reveal an unending adventure in depth and dimension, thus allowing the viewer their own interpretation. Thepaintings contain multiple layers applied slowly - as each previous layer dictates the next passage. I have always looked to nature as inspiration and sustenance, with light and time as unifying threads. It is light that is the cornerstone of physics and has allowed scientists to prove that we are made of the same materials as the stars. For the last twenty years my work has focused on storms and atmospheric phenomena. I have found in storms and the movement of clouds, metaphors for all of life. I seek to convey not only the beauty of these events, but also the immense power. My hope is to remind us that we cannot control the environment, but must live with it in cooperation and respect. |
