Jamie Gagan, God in the Middle #2, mixed media.

The monotype and mixed media work of Jamie Gagan is visually engaging and passionate. With dramatic color she adeptly combines representational and textural elements utilizing printmaking, drawing, acrylic and collage techniques.
Gagan is known for her dramatic mixed media commentary on current social events, sharing her creative viewpoint on sometimes difficult themes, such as human conflict and social justice. These politically charged compositions have been avoided by most gallery directors who, in general, lean toward safer imagery.

Artist Statement

I am a monotype and mixed media artist. I combine traditional printmaking techniques with collage, drawing and acrylic paint on a variety of supports. My imagery is diverse with representational and abstract elements in varying proportions.

I derive creative inspiration from many sources, including the written word, old lace and rusting metal, as well as the vast range of human emotion and every day experience. The desert landscape and brilliant light of northern New Mexico sustains me.

As I work I usually have multiple pieces in various stages of completion, each waiting for the right element to add and to continue the process. I continuously navigate shapes, colors, and words, sometimes covering up completely a previously composed area of painting. Each piece has its own history spontaneously emerging through these layers and may take several years to arrive at its final state.

Gagan: Border Guardian

Jamie Gagan, Border Guardian, mixed media, 27 x 18.

Since the events of September 11, 2001, the world has become a much smaller place. I frequently use political elements in my work, actively challenging my viewers to question their own role in the current state of the world. This work may be unsettling to some viewers. I believe that art has a role in shaking up the status quo, challenging individuals to reassess their personal values. In these sometimes dark days I am nonetheless optimistic, encouraged and heartened by the incredible potential of the human spirit to prevail and trancend unthinkable conditions and I hope that my work always reveals this element of optimism.
